I have grown accustomed to eating rice with every meal. In restaurants, plain rice (mi fan) is usually free with your meal. However, you will get charged one yuan for napkins. Not even napkins – just a little packet of tissues. If you want to pay extra for rice with character and flavor, try ordering dan chow fan (egg-fried rice) or my favorite Yangzhou chow fan.
It is said that Northern Chinese are noodle eaters, while Southern Chinese are rice eaters. This is somewhat true, although all Chinese eat both in great amounts.
